Peace Rally in Raleigh, NC (2003-02-15)

Christina (a cohort from Chapel Hill) and i drove to Raleigh for the peace rally at the old State Capitol and march through downtown. We were volunteering to help, so we got there early and help set up the sound stage, folded programs, covered the folding tables with plastic in the rain, and lots of other stuff. Somewhere between 5000, 6000, and 8000 folks showed up, some from as far away as Wilson and Winston-Salem.

[Christina folding Peace Rally programs] Christina folding programs and waving hello (this is a totally awful picture of her, but it's the only one that proves she was there; sorry, Christina).
[Early overview of the crowd] The rally kicked off at around 11:30 a.m., but the crowd started gathering early. This is from around 10:30 or 11 a.m.
[Sign: 'Clinton Had a Few Women ... Bush Is Screwing the Whole Country'] This sign reads: "Clinton Had a Few Women ... Bush is Screwing the Whole Country".
[Medium-sized dog with sign reading 'Peace'] Go, dog, go! Do you like my new sign?
[Small terrier with sign reading 'No War'] No, I do not like your new sign. Let's go to a dog party!
[Dude dressed in duct tape and plastic sheeting, wearing a tinfoil hat] This dude found a use for all that duct tape and plastic sheeting the U.S. Government advised us all to buy "in case of a chemical or biological weapons attack by terrorists". The tinfoil hat is a nifty addition---prevents mind control by the U.S. Government. A little on the late side, perhaps? [smile]
[A demonstrator on stilts, dressed as a stork] Several storks on stilts were wandering around. Or perhaps they meant to be doves....
[An enthralled crowd listens to a powerful speaker] The crowd was enthralled by a particularly moving poem read by an N.C. State University student of South Asian descent, describing how she and her family living in the U.S. have been terrorized and discriminated against since the attacks on the World Trade Center on 2001-09-11.
[Sign: 'Who Would Jesus Bomb?'] Hard to argue with this sign. Jesus may have gotten angry in the temple at Jerusalem, but all he did was flip over a few tables.
[Painting of the Peace Parasols] The painting of the peace parasols
[Banner: 'Bellydancers for Peace and Justice'] The Bellydancers for Peace and Justice showed up for the rally.
[Folks hanging out after the march around downtown] I was working during the march around downtown Raleigh (around 1:30 p.m.; it went right by Senator John Edwards' and Senator Elizabeth Dole's offices), so no photos of that. Quite a few folks stayed on into the afternoon after the march was over.
[A fur hat] Good thing PETA didn't show up ... this woman wearing a fur hat did.
[Sign: 'Make Love Not War' with picture of Tony Blair and George W. Bush kissing] This sign is great. The small print at the top reads: "A Valentine's Day Message to Tony Blair and George Bush". And yes, that's a doctored photo of the two of them French-kissing. Irony abounds.
