The easy ascent from near High Prairie to Lookout Mountain provides an excellent view not only of the east side of Mt. Hood, but also of snow peaks in Washington and central Oregon. The day was clear, and we could see as far as Three Sisters and Three-Fingered Jack.
The hike from Lookout Mtn. down to Oval Lake, nestled at the base of a steep ridge, was strenuous on the way back, but the alpine wildflowers were out in their glory; closer to the lake, the old-growth forest was tall, cool, and majestic.
We ate lunch on the shore of the lake; to our surprise and delight, a tiny bird came and joined us, snapping up insects out of the moss at the waterline, right at our feet. Our friend watched us with a keen eye, however, and flew off as soon as i made any motion to get out the camera....
